Funicular railway: Mendelbahn

A trip to the Mendel with the legendary funicular is a highlight for all technology and landscape lovers. The funicular dates back to the historic year 1903 and has only recently been renovated. With a gradient of up to 64%, it climbs 510 meters in just under 12 minutes. You can effortlessly reach the Mendel and enjoy the beautiful view over the Adige Valley and the south of South Tyrol. When the cable car was built in 1903, it was considered a technical marvel, as it was the steepest funicular in Europe and the longest cable car in the world. Even Sissi, Mahatma Gandhi and Karl May used the railroad to reach the Mendel Pass.

Rastenbachklamm

Gorge between Altenburg and Lake Kaltern is an impressive natural monument with its waterfalls and water basins, ivy-covered trees, fallen logs and rippling cool water.

Rastenbachklamm

A hike through the beautiful Rastenbachklamm gorge in the Altenburg Forest is also relaxing. The rippling water and the atmosphere of the forest have the same relaxing effect as a wellness massage. Via stairs and bridges you reach a large waterfall and finally the lookout point Altenburg. A visit to the nearby ruins of the St. Peter Basilica is also very nice. This is probably the oldest church in Tyrol.
